Home MenuCommuter Programs
A robust, well planned transportation system benefits the community as well as the individual commuter. Well connected infrastructure for all modes of transportation creates mobility options for our entire community. By expanding and supporting commuter programs we can ensure improved convenience and reduced commuting costs in addition to a cleaner environment, better health and a more vibrant community.
The City of Bozeman provides several commuter programs that will expand mobility options for those that want to experience these benefits.
Guaranteed Ride Home Program
The City of Bozeman's Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) Program is a commuter benefit that is designed to provide commuters who regularly use active modes of transportation to get to work, a free and reliable ride home when an emergency arises and they cannot use their original form of transportation for the return trip.
Commuter benefits such as the GRH Program assist communities in promoting active modes of transportation, which in turn reduces dependency on motor vehicles, reduces congestion, and creates a dynamic urban environment.
GoGallatin
GoGallatin is a partnership between the Western Transportation Institute, Montana State University, the City of Bozeman, the Big Sky Resort Area District, local businesses, and other partners that helps to provide transportation options and information for the Gallatin Valley. The GoGallatin website is an excellent resource for trip planning tools, joining in on the challenges and incentive programs, and connecting with others in the community that commute like you do.
gogallatin.org is also the place where participants in the Guaranteed Ride Home Program can sign up and track eligible trips.
Commuters of Bozeman
In order to capture the diversity and enthusiasm that commuters in Bozeman have for their active transportation experiences, we take this space to celebrate commuter stories. It is hoped that their personal experiences with biking, walking, taking the bus, or using other active transportation modes will inspire others to give those mobility options a try.
It is not uncommon to hear "I would feel more comfortable biking to work if more people did it too." It turns out that there are a lot of people using active modes of transportation to get around Bozeman but they just don't talk about it very much. This space is dedicated to those that try it, continue it and walk the walk (no pun intended). If you know someone who is inspiring send us an email and we will consider featuring them in an upcoming "Commuters of Bozeman" story.
General Tips and Tricks for Commuters
- Know before you go: Check local weather forecasts, City of Bozeman Streets Reports and other online resources to know what conditions exist.
- Coordinate stops: Whether its Farmer's Market or a stop to pick up groceries, plan your day around your commute and other daily needs and treat yourself to some time to say "hi" to neighbors along your commute or enjoy some fresh air at one of the local parks.
- Dress appropriately for both the outgoing trip and the trip home. Layer up and bring a shell or raincoat for that unexpected afternoon rain shower.
Tips for Bicyclists
- Check your equipment: Before you leave the house check your tire pressure, your brakes, and other bike components to make sure you are ready for the commute.
- Put a lid on it: Ride with a properly fitted bicycle helmet.
- Be visible: Equip your bike with appropriate lights and reflective devices to be more visible.
- Be aware of your surroundings (this includes being able to hear what is happening around you).
- Be courteous and follow the laws in place for bicyclists.
