Winter in Bozeman brings snow, requiring residents to take proactive measures for a safer and more efficient community. Follow these guidelines to positively impact our snow management efforts.
Plowing Operations
- Yellow City plows prioritize Snow Removal Routes which include arterial streets, collector streets, and business areas within Bozeman city limits.
- Motor graders begin Residential Street Snow Removal after a snow accumulation of four inches or more.
- Certain roads including N. 19th, N. 7th, sections of Main Street and Huffine Lane are maintained by Orange Montana Department of Transportation plows. For concerns, contact MDT at 406-556-4700.
- Privately maintained roads and streets with blue signs are managed by an HOA or private snow removal company. Contact your HOA for details.
- MSU Campus streets are maintained by MSU Facilities, reachable at 406-994-2107.
Collaborative Winter Operations Etiquette
- Park off the street whenever possible, allowing plows easy access to clear snow.
- Move your vehicle during snowfall to aid plowing operations.
- Do not use the street for long-term storage. Vehicles must be moved every 72 hours per Bozeman Municipal Code Sec. 36.04.260
- Avoid parking near driveways and mailboxes.
- If you are leaving town for more than 72 hours, arrange off-street parking to prevent ticketing and/or towing.
- Depositing of snow and ice is restricted and punishable by a fine per Bozeman Municipal Code Sec. 34.06.030
Shoveling Your Sidewalk
If your home or business borders a public sidewalk, you are responsible for snow removal. Be prepared with a shovel or snowblower, arrange for snow removal services, or ask a friendly neighbor for assistance. Residential snow must be cleared within 24 hours of snowfall per Bozeman Municipal Code Sec. 34.06.020

Equipment FAQs
- City Plows are ready 24/7 to keep our streets safe during the winter months. Plows remove snow and spread a sand/salt mixture at controlled intersections and stop signs.
- Motor Graders are equipped with snow gates. Snow gates are deployed before driveways, mailboxes, and intersections to minimize snow deposits in these areas. If there is heavy or deep snow, some snow may spill over the snow gate. Parked cars near driveways and mailboxes will hinder the graders ability to effectively clear snow.
- Spreader Trucks distribute Ice Slicer, a natural salt with anti-corrosive properties, in the downtown area and all roundabouts.
