As a renter, you may feel limited in your ability to make changes that conserve energy in your living space. However, there are still plenty of steps you can take to conserve energy, improve indoor air quality, and make your space more comfortable!

Weatherization

Although we often think about weatherization as a whole home approach, weatherization methods can be used in many types of living spaces (apartments, mobile homes, etc.). Weatherizing helps protect your living space from external elements such as cold air, moisture, and wildfire smoke. Many of these techniques can be done on a low budget.

Weatherization Tips and Tricks:

  • Use draft stoppers: Draft stoppers are affordable and easy to install. (You can even make these yourself!) Place them at the bottom of your doors and windows to prevent cold air from entering your apartment.
  • Seal air leaks: Check for gaps and cracks in your walls, windows, and doors. Use weather stripping or caulking to seal any air leaks that you find.
  • Insulate your windows: If your apartment has older windows, consider using window insulation film. This film is easy to install and helps to keep out drafts.
  • Add rugs: Adding rugs to bare floors can help insulate your space.

Make Small Changes

Consider how you use energy on a daily basis. Making small changes can make a difference on your utility bills!

  • Close curtains and blinds: During the winter months, keep your curtains and blinds closed at night to keep the warm air inside.
  • Adjust your thermostat: Set your thermostat to a lower temperature when you're not at home or asleep.
  • Wash clothes in cold water: By washing clothes in cold water, you can save a considerable amount of energy that would otherwise be used to heat the water.
  • Turn off lights and unplug electronics when not in use.
