Every life experiences unexpected disruptions. Transitional and emergency housing is housing that assists those who are temporarily in need of shelter while they secure longer term housing.  

Transitional housing provides individuals and families with safe and supportive housing and may provide case management services that enable participants to work toward self-sufficiency and long-term, stable housing. People experiencing a housing crisis or fleeing an unsafe situation need to find temporary housing quickly. Emergency shelters and interim housing are part of an effective crisis response system that identifies and quickly connects people who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness to housing assistance and other services.

In 2018, the Bozeman City Commission adopted Ordinance 1997, known as the “Transitional & Emergency Housing Text Amendment.” This ordinance added a new definition for this use along with corresponding zoning standards and evaluation criteria as part of the residential uses in the community.  Community Development staff developed the Transitional & Emergency Housing Manual to provide guidance for businesses, organizations and individuals to understand and help implement this residential use.  You can find copies of the manual and supporting documents below.
