NEW: Ordinance 2172 and Limited-Time Permit System

Ordinance 2172 (view in English - PDF or in Spanish - PDF) went into effect on Nov. 22, 2024.

On October 22, the Bozeman City Commission adopted Ordinance 2172 that prohibits camping in the right-of-way and on public property. Misdemeanor penalties are possible for those violating Ordinance 2172. Under the new law, a permit system was formed to allow those experiencing homelessness to apply for a permit to camp on the right-of-way.

Persons experiencing homelessness may apply for a permit using the form at the bottom of the page.  If approved, permit holders must comply with the enhanced regulations outlined in Ordinance 2172.

Permits are limited to 30 days, and renewals are determined on a case-by-case basis. A $25 fee will be assessed for each permit, unless waived.  This fee will help defray costs to the city, including costs of the garbage tote service.  The permit system is set to expire on October 1, 2025.
