View our new ordinance (Ordinance 2172) (PDF), which will go into effect on Nov. 22, 2024.
At their Oct. 22 meeting, the Bozeman City Commission adopted Ordinance 2172. This new ordinance repeals and replaces Ordinance 2147. The new law prohibits camping in the right-of-way and on public property and will go into effect Nov. 22. Misdemeanor penalties are possible for those violating Ordinance 2172. The new regulations allow for the creation of a permit system for persons experiencing homelessness to camp on the right-of-way. Person experiencing homelessness may apply for a permit to camp. If approved and issued a permit, permit holders must comply with enhanced regulations outlined in Ordinance 2172.
Permits are limited to 30 days, and renewals are determined on a case-by-case basis. A $25 fee will be assessed for each permit, unless waived. This fee will help defray costs to the city, including costs of the garbage tote service. The permit system is set to expire on October 1, 2025.
More information, including the permit application, will be available here in early November.
